Summary

‘It’s often said that winners write history, but there are no winners here’

This is a small story about big questions。
It's a story about family, community, life。
It starts with a storm - and a death。
But how does it end?

Two years have passed since the events that no one wants to think about。 Everyone has tried to move on, but there’s something about this place that prevents it。 The residents continue to grapple with life’s big questions: What is a family? What is a community? And what, if anything, are we willing to sacrifice in order to protect them?

As the locals of Beartown struggle to overcome the past, great change is on the horizon。 Someone is coming home after a long time away。 Someone will be laid to rest。 Someone will fall in love, someone will try to fix their marriage, and someone will do anything to save their children。 Someone will submit to hate, someone will fight, and someone will grab a gun and walk towards the ice rink。

So what are the residents of Beartown willing to sacrifice for their home?

Everything。

Fredrik Backman could write a grocery list and I wouldn’t be able to put it down

This was an emotionally draining, but excellent book。 Also - I didn't even realize it was part of a trilogy before I started it。 I am not sure I can go back and read the first two as this one was so exhausting。 This was an emotionally draining, but excellent book。 Also - I didn't even realize it was part of a trilogy before I started it。 I am not sure I can go back and read the first two as this one was so exhausting。 。。。more

Backman's style of writing is superb and if I was ever forced to declare a favourite author, he would be it。 The Winners completes the Beartown trilogy and it could probably be read as a stand alone, but I cannot fathom why a reader would do that! Backman's writing is so magical though and I was still very invested (and sobbing) at the end of the novel。4+ starsI tried to get this one finished as my last book of 2022, but didn't quite make it! Honoured to have it be the first for 2023 (although I mostly read it in 2022!)。 。。。more

I think we should’ve stopped at 2。 Too long, too many characters, too many platitudes。 I’m starting to notice that any book written during the pandemic is very depressing, which is the case with this one。 Not sure I can finish this one。

If I could give this a million stars, I would。 This book is about humanity。 Humanity in its rawest most human form- ugly, dark, beautiful, fleeting moments, where no one is perfect and everyone is deeply flawed。 A lovely reminder that humanity is messy。

3。5⭐️ I loved the first two, this one was probably my least favorite of the series, but I still enjoyed it

It hurt me to give this book 3 stars, so I changed my rating to 4 and feel better。 I love Fredrik Backman and I am always so blown away by his insight and his style of writing。 He’s such a talented author!!! I’m not going to lie, I was both excited and nervous when I saw there was a third Beartown book。 Nervous that it wasn’t going to live up to the others and nervous for the emotional state I assumed it would leave me in anyway。Without giving anything away, was it worth the read? Definitely。 Could the book have been a bit shorter? Yes。 It should also maybe come with a tw for rape, at the very least。

I love the characters of this series so my rating is higher than what I would give for this book and story alone。 I felt like this book relied too much on eliciting emotion and foreshadowing, and was far too long。 I found much of the dialogue to be quixotic and lacking the realistic nuance of conversation, like what’s said aloud vs what isn’t, that was so skillfully done in the previous books in this series。 Regardless, I found myself thinking about the story and characters throughout the day an I love the characters of this series so my rating is higher than what I would give for this book and story alone。 I felt like this book relied too much on eliciting emotion and foreshadowing, and was far too long。 I found much of the dialogue to be quixotic and lacking the realistic nuance of conversation, like what’s said aloud vs what isn’t, that was so skillfully done in the previous books in this series。 Regardless, I found myself thinking about the story and characters throughout the day and wanting to return to hear what happens next。 。。。more

Way to start off the new year with a BANG。 Owie。 The last third of the book is really what makes it。 The first large chunk is really slow and could’ve honestly been cut down a lot。 But boy is the pay-off worth it。 Time to feel empty for a few days。

Highly recommend this series of books! I do not understand the otherworldly praise this steaming mound of trauma porn is receiving。 Before the Beartown books came out, I had told a few people “I’ll read anything Backman writes。” I still love Backman’s work and respect his undeniable talent, but after slogging through what felt like a high quality teenage drama from MTV, I’m going to be a bit more choosy。

Stacy

Beautiful ending to the series。

I’m not crying!!!! 😭😭😭Finally finished all 670 pages of this amazing ending to the Beartown trilogy。 Fredrik Backman created truly unforgettable characters that will cause you to bawl your eyes out。 I can tell so much love and care went into this story, and I so appreciate this author for sharing his talent!

5 - idek what to say。 this was good。 like fuck。 benji deserved better。 i think the only think i disliked about the book was it’s length i didn’t find it fully necessary for the book but other than that, it was amazing

I could read books about Beartown forever and still be content。 A great addition to the trilogy, hopefully there is more to come。

Backman creates wonderful, very human characters, but this long novel contains too much hockey and a lot of telling rather than showing。 There is no need to talk about how much the people of his towns value hockey since it is obvious from the actions of the chartacters。 There is also no need for constant foreshadowing to keep the readers' interest (for example, we know who will live and who will die from the beginning and are constantly reminded)。 Nor do we need to be told that certain character Backman creates wonderful, very human characters, but this long novel contains too much hockey and a lot of telling rather than showing。 There is no need to talk about how much the people of his towns value hockey since it is obvious from the actions of the chartacters。 There is also no need for constant foreshadowing to keep the readers' interest (for example, we know who will live and who will die from the beginning and are constantly reminded)。 Nor do we need to be told that certain characters are tragic heroes。 If we can't see without being told, they are not really tragic heroes。 A lovely book anyway, just not a perfect one。 。。。more
